Who are the old guys?

"The old guys stole our best ideas" Frederic Goudy

In homage to all the soldiers. I love these monuments which are present as witnessess of our wars. Some are simple, some are "kingliness".

As more than 1.3 French people were killed in the first World War, the war memorial became part of the scenery of every French town and village. During the years 1919 and 1920, thousands of monuments were installed and inaugurated. Every 11th of November they formed the centre of commemoration. Sometimes the names of those who had been killed in the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian war were set alongside those of 1914-18 (and some communes have since added to these the names of those who were killed in the Second World War, and in the colonial wars of Indochina and Algeria). But it is always those of the 1914-18 War which predominate. One can stand today in a tiny deserted village and read with astonishment the long list of its inhabitants who lost their lives in those years.

From the book "The age of illusion: art and politics in France 1918-1940", by Douglas and Madeleine Johnson
